Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen: Are you eating these fruits and vegetables?
Most of us eat fruits and veggies thinking that we’re avoiding the unhealthy foods that are out there.
And for the most part, we’re making better choices than most people.
But did you know that some fruits and vegetables carry more pesticides and chemicals on them than others? Strawberries, for instance, are like a pesticide sponge since they are water based and we eat the skin.
Not only is it important to eat organic but avoiding genetically modified foods is also a good idea.
I always know what to look for if it isn’t labeled. When you go to a local farmers market, not one bell pepper looks the same. When you buy peppers at Costco, they all look the same size and color.
Tell me they cannot be genetically modified to come out exactly the same way, sweeter and a solid bright color? When did blueberries get so big and sweet? Wild produce is so different than manufactured and genetically modified.
Some sweet corn and papayas sold in the United States are GMOs, so choose organic to avoid GMO versions of these crops.
Are some organic foods even better than others?
Short answer – yes!
The Environmental Working Group released it’s 2018 Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen list. This year, the report found that almost 70 percent of non-organic samples tested positive for at least one pesticide and many of these chemicals are banned for use on food in other countries, even though these chemicals are declared safe by the U.S. Government.
Our laws and regulations for pesticides are outdated and are supporting the food industry not the health and safety of the people.
I recommend choosing and growing organic as often as possible, but if you’re on a tight budget or your choices are limited, the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists will help you avoid the most contaminated fruits and veggies.
Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen
I’ve included two lists of produce, one for “The Clean Fifteen,” which is the list of produce that is safe to eat in non-organic form. And then the list of the “Dirty Dozen” which believe it or not, the nonorganic versions “when conventionally grown, tested positive for at least 47 different chemicals, with some testing positive for as many as 67.”
Although chemicals are in the majority of foods you eat, it’s important for you to get those nasty toxins away from your body as much as possible. The Dirty Dozen list will help. If not, they start to accumulate in your body causing negative effects like drowsiness, nausea, tremors, and difficulties breathing.
If you want to start fresh, jumpstart into weight loss, and cleanse your blood and intestines from these chemicals, I recommend a 21-day detox. This is something I do 2 to 4 times a year to cleanse my system and energize my body. (Start with this 21-day detox here.)
