THE BEST WAY TO SEED A POMEGRANATE
Pomegranate seeds are the perfect accessory to any salad, dip, yogurt, cheesecake, etc. They are high in vitamin C and potassium, a great source of fiber.
But, these little fruits can seem daunting, with the thick rind holding hundreds of red seeds that can pop and stain. These “seeds” are called arils, and they’re full of delicious, sweet-tart juice surrounding a small white crunchy seed. You can eat the whole arils including the fiber-rich seeds.
If you don’t know how to easily seed a pomegranate, you might choose to buy the pre-packaged pomegranate arils. I’d highly suggest just seeding them yourself. The pre-packaged arils have added preservatives and sugars (plus they are 6x more expensive!). Follow these steps and you’ll be a pro, without staining your fingers or countertops!
Start by slicing off the two ends of the fruit. Then score with your knife in 4 even sections down the side of the fruit. Crack the pomegranate into fourths.
Prep a bowl of lukewarm to cool water. Invert a piece of the pomegranate into the water and with your fingers roll the arils free of the white pith. The arils will sink to the bottom and the pith will float, for easy removal with a spoon or fingertip.
Strain the bowl and dry the arils on a paper towel or cloth (they keep longer in the fridge if they are not sitting in a bunch of moisture).
Throw them in a salad, my holiday guacamole or a smoothie for a healthy snack! Enjoy!
