Ever Wanted to Fit In? Here’s Why You Don’t Need To.
Ever Wanted To Fit In? Here’s Why You Don’t Need To.
Most of us early on, want to belong, to fit in, to be like our peers. We feel the pressure to be part of a group, a member of the club or be like everyone else.
And what happens when you don’t fit in?
I was one of these people probably because I was poor. All my life I’ve been an artist and very creative, so if it was interesting or uncommon, I was into it.
In high school and college, I went to thrift stores to buy clothes because vintage was more affordable than trendy.
I never REALLY fit in.
Obviously, I wasn’t popular and I certainly didn’t have a lot of friends.
It was easy growing up, not unlike most people.
There were times when I felt like life was too hard and I no longer wanted to be in it.
Thankfully, I kept trudging forward and didn’t give up hope in my potential.
Looking back, why did I feel the need to be like everyone else? What is that for? Why do most of us feel that way?
It’s genetics my friend. Centuries of humans needed to fit into tribes and villages in order to survive. Our brains haven’t figured out that we don’t have to do that anymore.
How do you overcome this internal genetic programming to fit in?
I believe it is through self-affirming love and acceptance. I try to teach my kids to talk to themselves with love, to be the voice of reason in their head and to constantly remind themselves that they are good enough, just the way they are.
When was the last time you looked in the mirror & said, “You are SO loved. You are amazing and right on track. You are perfect the way you are. I love you.” We are told that if we do that, it is conceited & arrogant. For instance, “You shouldn’t be sure of yourself or confident because you’re just bragging.”
When did we decide that we, especially women, shouldn’t be confident in our intelligence, talent, & beauty?
Is it to suppress our brilliance, to keep us small & unseen?
If you are allowing this unworthiness to permeate your life, it is time to stand up, allow yourself to stand out in the crowd and use your voice as a force for good. Being authentically you is a powerful.
Truth be told, we all have a unique gift, something that makes us special and different. More than that, it’s a reason not to fit in but to stand out in the crowd. So tell me, what’s your unique gift? Hollar back in the comments below. I can’t wait to hear all the ways you choose not to fit in.
Here’s to all the specialness that is you,
